Floating the Niangua River

Kayaks, rafts and paddleboards on the river below Bennett Spring, from your hosts 4 minutes from the park.

Updated November 2026.

The Niangua flows north through the Ozarks and runs right past Bennett Spring State Park. The spring adds more than 100 million gallons of cool, clear water a day, which helps keep the river floatable for much of the year. It's a gentle Class I river, so it works for first-timers and families as well as anglers.

Float with Steele River Kayaks and Boards

Bennett Spring State Park doesn't rent canoes, kayaks or rafts, so you'll need your own boat or an outfitter. Our partner Steele River Kayaks and Boards runs kayak, raft and paddleboard float trips on the Niangua, about 15 minutes (11.6 miles) from our getaways.

  • Pickup and return. They can pick you up and bring you back, so nobody has to run a car shuttle.
  • Dogs welcome. Dogs can ride on all of their kayaks, rafts and paddleboards. Bringing a dog on a raft takes one extra waiver, and they suggest dog booties to protect paws and the boat.
  • Kayaks, rafts or paddleboards. Rafts work well for groups and families, and kayaks and paddleboards for anyone who wants their own boat.

Call Steele River at 573-932-4299 to book, or visit their website. Mention that you're staying at Misty Oak Getaways.

Steele River is the outfitter we personally use, and the one we recommend to our guests.

When to float the Niangua

With the right conditions, the Niangua can be floated year-round. Summer is the main season, and the stretch just below Bennett Spring gets the most traffic, especially on hot summer weekends. For a quieter day on the water, go on a weekday.

Rain can raise the river fast. Before you go, check the U.S. Geological Survey gauge for the Niangua River at Windyville, and ask your outfitter about conditions. Don't float when the water is high or muddy.

Missouri float trip rules

A few rules apply on Missouri rivers and at the park:

  • No glass. Glass beverage containers aren't allowed on boats on Missouri's navigable rivers. Pack cans and plastic.
  • Seal your cooler. Coolers have to be closed so nothing can spill into the water, and trash goes in a container you can close.
  • Life jackets for kids. Children under 7 must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on the water.
  • No alcohol in the park. Alcohol isn't allowed in canoes and rafts within Bennett Spring State Park.
  • Pack it out. Take all your trash home with you.

Fishing the Niangua

Below the park, the Niangua from the Bennett Spring branch down to Prosperine Access is a Missouri Department of Conservation White Ribbon Trout Area, and the river also holds bass, catfish and goggle-eye. You need a Missouri fishing permit, and trout rules here differ from the trout park, so check the current MDC trout regulations before you fish. For fishing inside the park, see our Bennett Spring trout fishing guide.

What to pack for a float

  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses with a strap
  • Water shoes or sandals that stay on your feet
  • Plenty of water and snacks in a sealed cooler
  • A dry bag for your phone, keys and wallet
  • A trash bag
  • Dry clothes and a towel for the ride back
  • For dogs: a leash, booties, water and a bowl
